Serendipity Gems: Zodiac and Birthstone History and Explainations

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Id just like to firstly say this will be a weekly blog on a Sunday evening around 9pm so bookmark us :) We also have a massive double giveaway over at Serendipity Jewellery until July 30th 9pm.

As we write this we are thinking about the significance gemstones have in each and everyone of our lives. From precious heirlooms to a seemingly worthless rock that signifies something memorable.

I have lots of fun pictures to share and knowledge of course!

Above is a table which shows quite clearly the Month the colour of the gem, what the gem is named, and the associated qualities of the stone or person born in that month. Just below you will also see an image stating which birth months correspond to the zodiac signs that are written in the stars and to this day spark inspiration and wonder around the world.

From what i can find it seem the history of birthstones originates in the first century. Jewish historian Josephus believed there was a connection between the twelve stones in Aaron's breastplate, the twelve months of the year, and the twelve signs of the zodiac. Translations and interpretations of the passage in Exodus regarding the breastplate have varied widely, however, with Josephus himself giving two different lists for the twelve stones. (Kunz argues that Josephus saw the breastplate of the Second Temple, not the one described in Exodus). St. Jerome, referencing Josephus, said the Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:19–20) would be appropriate for Christians to use. In the eighth and ninth century, religious treaties associating a particular stone with an apostle were written because the book of Revelation stated "their name would be inscribed on the Foundation Stones, and his virtue".Practice became to keep twelve stones and wear one a month. Wearing a single birthstone is only a few centuries old, although modern authorities differ on dates Kunz places the custom in eighteenth century Poland, while the Gemological Institute of America starts it in Germany in the 1560s.

Modern lists of birthstones have little to do with either the breastplate or the Foundation Stones of Christianity. Tastes, customs and confusing translations have distanced them from their historical origins, with one author calling the 1912 Kansas list "nothing but a piece of unfounded salesmanship."

Ancient traditional birthstones are society-based birthstones. The table below contains many stones which are popular choices, often reflecting Polish tradition.

The Gregorian calendar has poems matching each month with its birthstone. These are traditional stones of English-speaking societies. Tiffany & Co. published these poems "of unknown author" for the first time in a pamphlet in 1870

By her who in this month (January) is born
No gem save
garnets should be worn;
They will ensure her constancy,
True friendship, and fidelity.

The February-born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they an
amethyst will wear.

Who in this world of ours their eyes
In March first open shall be wise,
In days of peril firm and brave,
And wear a
bloodstone to their grave.

She who from April dates her years,
Diamonds
shall wear, lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow; this stone,
Emblem of innocence, is known.

Who first beholds the light of day
In spring's sweet flowery month of May
And wears an
emerald all her life
Shall be a loved and happy wife.

Who comes with summer to this earth,
And owes to June her hour of birth,
With ring of
agate on her hand
Can health, wealth, and long life command.

The glowing
ruby shall adorn,
Those who in July are born;
Then they'll be exempt and free
From love's doubts and anxiety.

Wear a
sardonyx or for thee,
No conjugal felicity;
The August-born without this stone,
`Tis said, must live unloved and lone.

A maiden born when September leaves
Are rustling in September's breeze,
A
sapphire on her brow should bind
`Twill cure diseases of the mind.

October's child is born for woe,
And life's vicissitudes must know,
But lay an
opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest.

Who first comes to this world below
With drear November's fog and snow,
Should prize the
topaz's amber hue,
Emblem of friends and lovers true.

If cold December gave you birth,
The month of snow and ice and mirth,
Place on your hand a
turquoise blue;
Success will bless whate'er you do.

—Gregorian Birthstone Poems
Modern birthstones

In 1912, in an effort to standardize birthstones, the (American) National Association of Jewelers met in Kansas and officially adopted a list. The Jewelry Industry Council of America updated the list in 1952 by adding alexandrite to June and citrine to November; specifying pink tourmaline for October; replacing December's lapis with zircon; and switching the primary/alternative gems in March. The American Gem Trade Association added tanzanite as a December birthstone in 2002. Britain's National Association of Goldsmiths created their own standardized list of birthstones in 1937.

And i have one final piece of interesting information about of favourite and most popular gemstones.... They are different and surprisingly similar throughout different ancient cultures, which of course is where we find some of our Serendipity Inspiration.

I hope again, this was an interesting read for you! I certainly found the writing of the blog very enthralling!

Agate is a stone of strength. It was used by the Ancients on the breastplates of armor to give warriors strength and make them victorious in battle. Energetically, it is considered to give strength in both battle and physically.

Agate enhances creativity and strengthens the intellect, making it a beneficial stone for both students and artists. It is also known as a good luck stone. As a stone of harmony, one of the things agate does is balance yin/yang energy. Agate increases energy. However, because it is a grounding stone, it does not increase energy at all times, but rather enables bursts of energy as needed. In this way, agate is a conservation stone, and enhances longevity.

Agate is a very protective stone. It is especially protective for children, and makes an excellent stone for children's amulets, medicine bags, jewelry, or just to carry around in a pocket. Agates are said to be especially useful for protecting children from falling.

In the same way, it assists with acceptance of all things. It can be very beneficial for self-examination as well as examination of the circumstances one finds oneself in. These qualities make agate superior for easing anxiety and stress. Plume agates are especially helpful for anxiety and stress relief. Particularly when placed on the Solar Plexus (3rd) Chakra it can help one to accept one's emotions, thereby helping overcome those emotions that one wants to remove.

Because of the harmonizing qualities of agate, and its emotional energies of removing and releasing resentments and bitterness, it is also considered by many to be an excellent stone for helping to heal and improve relationships.

Agate can cleanse and stabilize the aura by removing and/or transforming negative energy.

As far as relationships go, agate is a stone of marital and romantic fidelity.

Agate is said to strengthen the body and the body's connection to the earth. It also increases energy. Agate is used in crystal healing for healing of all kinds by bringing the elements of the healee into harmony. Physically, agate is said to be particularly helpful with tooth and gum issues, stomach problems, physical endurance, insomnia. Note that healing crystal meanings are spiritual supports to healing and are not prescriptions or healthcare information.

White agate is especially considered a stone of hope.

Chakras: All agates can remove blockages from any chakra. Agate also relates to specific chakras according to the stone color.

Rock Lore & Tidbits: Agate is a variety of chalcedony which is a microcrystalline quartz. Agate is a more translucent microcrystalline quartz and technically is striped, though many stones named agates are not striped, whereas jasper is more opaque. There are many, many different types of agates in many different color combinations, and they are found all over the world. Different types are known fr different appearances and/or properties.

Agate is so popular and so widespread that it is the state gemstone (or stone) of a number of US states: fortification agate (red, black, yellow bands), Kentucky; agate, Louisiana and Montana, Tennessee (state stone); Lake Superior agate, Minnesota; blue agate, Nebraska; Fairburn agate, South Dakota; prairie agate, Nebraska (state stone); fire agate, Arizona.

A Personal Look Inside Serendipity Jewellery

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

If you have found me here you may be familiar with Serendipity Jewellery. If you are not then thank you for taking the time to find us on blogger and check us out for Truly Unique Handmade Statements.

This particular blog is all about the mind behind Serendipity Jewellery, namely, mine!

My name is Freya Lucy Elizabeth Cowin, you can find me listed as Freya Lucy Elizabeth on most popular social networking sites and this is my enterprise, and my adventure.

I'll not give away everything all in one blog (to be honest i very much doubt i could in one sitting!) So this is a summary of everything that motivates me to bring you, each individual you, a truly unique handmade statement that will represent your individual tastes, lifestyle, personality, indeed anything you want the peice to reflect.

I started to make jewellery as a hobby in 2010 after exiting an abusive relationship as a type of therapy, i have certain mental health issues and of course such a situation didn't help!

Since then i have gathered various skills with the art of jewellery making, which has caused customers at work, friends and family to say "oooh you should sell your creations" and in February 2014, i actually took the plunge and started to research what needed to be done. At this point I had just lost my job and found myself on JSA, and again i was using Jewellery as a therapy against mental illness, or rather against a severe relapse into the dark hole.

From there, given my stubbornness, rather than sit and feel sorry for myself, as we all do from time to time, i decided to put everything i had into marketing and promoting my creations. To my surprise my creations (that had previously just been hobbies) began to get rather popular, and i wondered if i could do better. This prompted a development in my amateur skill, and now i can provide many, much more professional pieces. Not only did my product development occur, but i started to take free marketing seminars, and subscribing to free marketing help blogs like Marketing Creatively, and this then helped me boost the reach of my creations, of which boosts my confidence into learning more new techniques and so the cycle goes on.

It is still VERY early days yet, but at this stage we have just registered formally with the Inland Revenue, we have events lines up for the next couple of months, we also have professional business cards and various social networking pages all to promote the business, and meanwhile i am in the background researching new gemstones, base metals, techniques, styles, fashions, timeless classics and trends to make sure i can bring the best of the best, to you, my customers.

So there is your teaser autobiography! As time goes on i'm sure i will tell you more about the long life i've lead which has given me the experience to be who and what i am today.
